What can we learn from the new movements for degrowth?
As the consequences of ever more economic growth continue to take their toll on species and habitats around the world, what are the practical paths we can take towards a system that is more sustainable and fair?
Might degrowth be a disaster for the poorest, both here and in the global south? Or could societies thrive and grow in other ways instead? What role will governments and businesses play?
Last year, we connected with the ethical consumer community, to explore the concepts of degrowth, post growth and doughnut economics and examine what they might mean for consumers and producers across a range of sectors.
We met on Friday, 8th November 2024, at Rich Mix in Shoreditch, London for a day of discussions, talks and workshops.
Here is what some of the attendees said about the day:
“I enjoyed hearing the stories about people taking positive action. Always so inspiring and helps me to stay focused on my own work. It is easy to fall into despair about the state of the world but we have to look the problems straight in the eye and move over, around or under them.”
“Extremely positive and reassuring atmosphere – necessary when we are facing such daunting challenges. I learned about some initiatives I hadn’t even dreamed of, including a few that I might be able to support in a small way. All attendees whom I met were also approachable, thoughtful and sane people, not at all how the right-wing media like to portray the whole ecology movement.”
“The content was ambitious and intersectional. I liked the challenge to the status quo, hearing from your researchers and also introducing more diversity and youth to the conversation. The venue was great and the food was excellent.”
